On Sunday, Mike continued the sermon on adultery and divorce. Divorce touches each of us in some way or another. But the church should not be a place of judgment or self-righteousness. It should be a place of encouragement, where mercy is shown and the truth is spoken gently.
“Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery.” – Matthew 19:8-9
The root of our sins and problems are not due to issues with our spouses or others in our lives. Rather, we have chosen to turn away from God and his word. God can, and will, soften a hardened heart. We just have to give him room to work.
“See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.” – Hebrews 3:12
- Has your heart ever grown cold and hard?
- Did you ever deal with it?
- Where in your life could it be happening right now?
- Are you ready to face it and deal with it… right now?
